Brazil, the new dream destination for “digital nomads”
Following the introduction of a special visa for “digital nomads”, many people have decided to pack their bags and move to Brazil, renting or investing in exclusive properties whose price and housing costs seem particularly attractive.
Brazil, a country of opportunity
As the fifth largest country in the world and the leader in South America in terms of GDP (gross domestic product), Brazil is undeniably a strong economic power.
It is among the world’s major economic markets and is considered one of the main tourist destinations in South America.
With its more than 212 million inhabitants, Brazil attracts many tourists, students and foreign investors every year.
Mainly known for its exceptional landscapes and beaches as well as for its famous Carnival, Brazil is also a strong global economic hub despite strong inequalities further deepened by the global pandemic in recent years.
The country is thus positioned as a significant player in world economic development.
The international luxury real estate market is an excellent opportunity for investors, while at the same time realizing their dream of starting a new life in one of the most beautiful countries in the world.

A new gateway for digital “nomads”
A new visa was created, this Monday January 24, 2022, by the ordinance in charge of the granting of temporary visas and residence permits for migrants.
Dedicated to “digital nomads”, regardless of their country of origin, many companies that have opted for a 100% home-office operation following the COVID-19 pandemic (“remote-first companies”) thus boost the local economy and the Brazilian labor market.
These companies come from all sectors, such as technology (Strapi) or design (InVision).
The Brazilian government tends to support this trend by facilitating the insertion of those actors with undeniable financial power in their territory in order to boost the local economy, which has been slowed down by a huge drop in annual tourism caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Applying for “digital domad” visa
Obtaining this visa requires meticulous follow-up of several steps and criteria. First of all, a minimum income is required to guarantee that the visa applicant will be able to meet all his or her needs. This minimum is set at $1,500 per month or $18,000 in savings.
It will also be necessary to provide a document that serves as a proof of a contract between the applicant and a foreign employer, as well as valid proof of health insurance.
It is essential to note that an appointment at the Brazilian Consulate General in the applicant’s home country will be important to successfully complete the application.
Applicants who are already in Brazil also have the option of completing their application via the online immigration portal.
Although obtaining this visa requires a certain personal investment, these steps can be very beneficial for “digital nomads”.
They will notably benefit from a particularly enriching experience working from home in a fabulous country and may even be granted with a relatively high purchasing power.
A way for Rio de Janeiro to become even more attractive
The new visa allows digital workers to settle in Brazil for a period of one year, renewable as long as a work contract is maintained.
Brazil is not the only or the first country to develop such a scheme: other Latin American countries such as Panama or Costa Rica have followed Norway and the United Arab Emirates who launched the movement.
The municipality of the city of Rio de Janeiro has clearly expressed its desire to make Rio the new “hub” of “digital nomads”.
This goal implies a lot of investments in areas that still dissuade from settling in Rio such as infrastructure and especially the local security level.
